The Olivet Discourse – Part Five

There are two Chiasms to be found in the Olivet Discourse. The first is found in Matthew and Mark’s account of the Olivet Discourse.

A – Matthew 24:8, Mark 13:8 – All these are the beginning of sorrows.
 B – Matthew 24:10, Mark 13:12 – And then shall many be offended, and shall betray one another, and shall hate one another.
  C – Matthew 24:15, Mark 13:14 – When ye therefore shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, stand in the holy place …
   X – Matthew 24:21, Mark 13:19 – For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be.
  C’ – Matthew 24:24, Mark 13:22 – For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders;
 B’ – Matthew 24:29, Mark 13:24-25 – Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken:
A’ - Matthew 24:30, Mark 13:26 – And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.

These verses form the following Chiasm:

A – The Beginning
  B – Human relations shaken
   C – False Messiah
    X – The Great Tribulation
   C’ – False Messiahs
  B’ – The Heavens shaken
A’ – The Culmination

However, Luke’s account of the Olivet Discourse presents a different Chiasm. You can see that there is no mention of false Messiahs. Again, the Church knows Who the Messiah is and will not be deceived, so Luke does not mention this. Please note that at the Culmination Luke says that they will see the Son of Man coming in glory. We will not see this because we will be with the Lord Jesus! (Revelation 19:14)

A – Luke21:11 – fearful sights and great signs shall there be from heaven.
  B – Luke 21:16 – And ye shall be betrayed both by parents, and brethren, and kinsfolks, and friends;
   X – Luke 21:22 – For these be the days of vengeance, that all things which are written may be fulfilled.
  B’ – Luke 21:24 – And there shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars;
A’ – Luke 21:27 – And then shall they see the Son of man coming in a cloud with power and great glory.

A – The Beginning
  B – Human Relationships Shaken
   X – The Days of Vengeance
  B’ – The Heavens Shaken
A’ – The Culmination

While the Luke Chiasm does not mention false Messiahs, both chiasms show that the focus of the Olivet Discourse is the Great Tribulation or the Days of Vengeance. The Tribulation will be a time of the Lord’s great and justified wrath against a rebellious world.

Praise the Lord for the wisdom of His Word that He has given us. Praise the Lord for the Hope that we have in the Lord Jesus. Praise His name forever!
